The American Red Cross, Black Hills Chapter, hopes to train at least 300 people on what to do when a person has a heart attack. In order to increase regional preparedness, the BHAC is expanding CPR trainings to smaller western South Dakota communities. Although they have local instructors committed to this effort, their manikins are housed at their main office in Rapid City. This creates a significant logistical issue due to the enormity of their service area, inclement weather and the limited number of manikins currently available.
The training program was greatly enhanced when the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation and Rapid Chevrolet Cadillac presented Resusci Anne training unit to the organization in formal ceremonies today.
In presenting the CPR unit, which is essential for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training, Michele Lewis said, “Last year the Black Hills Area Chapter trained 2,716 individuals in CPR/AED. This manikin will help us expand our services in western South Dakota and is especially valuable when teaching children”
The CPR unit gives signals telling when the trainee is applying the right pressure in the right spot or breathing correctly into the victim’s mouth. With the training, the students learn the “feel” of giving quick, lifesaving emergency treatment.
The National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation is part of the National Automobile Dealers Association with headquarters in McLean, Virginia. It’s membership includes over 19,000 franchised new car and truck dealers in the U.S.
Rapid Chevrolet Cadillac would like to thank Executive Director, Richard Smith and Regional Development Coordinator, Michele Lewis for taking time to come out to the dealership and to Russ Korzeniewski for giving a CPR demonstration on the new Resusci Anne. We wish you much success in your future CPR trainings.
The American Red Cross-Black Hills Area Chapter is responsible for assisting families and individuals recovering from home fires, flooding, wildfires and other disaster situations. Our Chapter serves a population of over 230,000 people and an area over 38,000 square miles. Last year we responded to 102 house fires and four major storm disasters. Our response area includes 4 of the top 10 lowest income per capita counties in the nation. Preparedness through CPR training is a major component of our mission.
